Bedard's defensive skills training began in 1979, when he undertook the study of Okinawan Uechi-Ryu Karate and Kodokan Judo. Over the years he has become experienced in the disciplines of Aikido, freestyle wrestling and various forms of combat jujutsu which form the foundation of his eclectic style of combat instruction. In 1984, Bedard earned a spot on the United States Karate Team and competed internationally for the next ten tears. For many years he was a top seeded competitor in the US Men's Heavyweight Fighting Division. He has traveled and competed around the world and has earned many honors for his state and country. Today he serves as Chairman for Karate with the Tallahassee Sports Council and Director of Florida for the International Uechi-Ryu Karate Federation (IUKF)
In 1986, Bedard began his law enforcement career in the State of Florida. Immediately upon graduation of the Law Enforcement Academy, Bedard, drawing from his martial arts background began instructing recruits in defensive tactics and intermediate weaponry. He continues to teach at the Florida Public Safety Training Center (FPSTC) as a police trainer, general topics instructor, and Instructor trainer for the Defensive Tactics program. He continues to remain active in the field as a reserve officer for the Tallahassee Police Department. As a police professional he is experienced in pre-trial preparations, and open court testimony for both criminal and civil cases .He has worked as a private consultant, providing research and case preparation for James D. White J.D, in police, public safety, and private security issues. Well versed in liability issues, Bedard makes use of this experience in the development of quality, defensible police training.
Bedard has influenced training practices in many departments in the United States , Europe, Canada , Latin America the Caribbean and Asia . He continues to research new technology and new training methods to further develop the law enforcement occupation. His open minded training method has earned him respect among his peers both within and outside of the law enforcement community. |
